The Comeback Season (kinda, sorta)

Comeback season is in motion, kinda, sorta, but I have to start this by saying I’m an unreliable content creator. I had grand plans to create a content machine from my videos, spinning out blog posts, twitter threads, etc. and I’ve done nothing of the sort.

Alas, content is coming, old content, but content all the same.

It feels weird talking about a video that’s focused on life in 2022 when life in 2023 feels so different, but we’re going to roll with it.

Excessive planning/researching = Inaction

What’s the first thing you do when you’re interested in a new thing that you’ve never done before? You hit up Google (or YouTube) and dive into all things [insert topic here] and that’s exactly what I did. The making of the product was the easy part, but actually knowing how to run a profitable product business was not something I’d done before.

I was deep in the weeds of understanding how to operate a product-based business, and for a while, I was really enjoying the process, until it started to feel destabilising. Whether it was researching how to safely send chilled products across the UK with the appropriate temperature-controlled packaging (word to the wise, it’s expensive). Or trying to figure out how to achieve the illustrious 40% profit margins retailers supposedly require from brands whilst also making a little something for the business. I was at a loss and I quietly downed tools.

A (very slow) comeback season

It’s impossible to stay away from things that excite you or make you feel good for too long. We all somehow always find our way back to these things (though I’d suggest you leave that boy/girl/person in the past friend). That’s essentially what happened with Dolce Butter. Even when I wasn’t thinking about it, I was thinking about it. Every trip to the supermarket included browsing the dairy aisle to see if any of the big brands had come out with a sweet butter flavour yet. Every trip to Central London included a quick dash to Selfridges or Harrods to see what’s happening in the premium butter world. I’d see colour combinations and think they’d work great for a future flavour. I know in my heart of hearts that this is what I need to be doing. Even if just slowly.

You have everything you need already

It’s so easy to look outside of yourself to change your situation. I came to the conclusion last summer that I have everything I need (unless you want to give me some pre-seed money, in which case, I need you, please and thanks). But seriously, I’ve got everything I need. We can get so consumed looking for something, and then when we get it, we squander it because we didn’t know how to be a good steward of it.

I’m pretty f*cking good at what I do, and even the things I don’t quite know how to do at the start, I sure as hell figure it out by the end. I needed to trust that.

So where to next?

New equipment (that has been kicking my arse trying to reformulate the recipes). New branding (that has both delighted and stressed me out). One less flavour (byeeee lemon (for now anyway)).

I’ll be diving into all of the above in the coming videos, but for now, I’m glad to be back in motion. Bear with me as I try to work through this backlog of videos. Happy comeback season!
